Ibiza Underground, a popular club on the island, was abruptly shut down by local authorities on August 6th, without any prior warning. The closure forced the cancellation of a Zero Island Residents event that had been scheduled for that night. The club shared the news on Instagram, expressing their shock and uncertainty about their future. They thanked fans for their support but admitted they didn't know if or when they might reopen.
Ibiza Underground, which had just celebrated its 23rd anniversary, was known for its low-key vibe, attracting industry workers and hosting big-name DJs without much fanfare. The club typically operated three nights a week during the summer season.
The closure sparked concern among fans, with some suggesting it reflected broader issues facing Ibiza's nightlife. This came on the heels of Space Ibiza founder Pepe Roselló losing a legal battle over his former club's logo, forcing Eden Ibiza to rebrand as NOSPACE.
Additionally, new alcohol restrictions introduced last year had put a damper on the party scene, banning happy hours, free drinks, and limiting alcohol consumption at all-inclusive resorts. Shops were also prohibited from selling alcohol after 9:30 PM.
These challenges were compounded by the ongoing struggle against overtourism on the island. Earlier this year, residents joined global protests, highlighting the strain on the local workforce, with over 80% of tourism employees reportedly unable to make ends meet, forcing some to live in cars or caravans due to the island's soaring costs.
